{"id":15548,"date":"2019-01-22T11:57:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T16:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=15548"},"modified":"2019-01-23T12:01:19","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T17:01:19","slug":"marylands-2018-kindergarten-assessment-results-continued-to-show-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/marylands-2018-kindergarten-assessment-results-continued-to-show-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland\u2019s 2018 Kindergarten Assessment Results Continued to Show Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>More Students Demonstrate Readiness<\/h3>\n<p>BALTIMORE \u2013 State and local school system results of Maryland&#8217;s 2018 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) reveal that incoming students are continuing to make strides in their preparation.<\/p>\n<p>A new report, released today before the Maryland State Board of Education, found that 47 percent of the State\u2019s kindergarteners had demonstrated readiness.\u00a0 This means that the students were fully prepared to participate in the kindergarten curriculum.\u00a0 This compares to 45 percent in 2017-18 and 43 percent in 2016-17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery step we take in kindergarten readiness leads to a big, important leap in student success,\u201d said Dr. Karen Salmon, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. \u201cContinued focus on quality early learning in our State may be the greatest investment we can make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The KRA was administered by all kindergarten teachers between the beginning of the school year and October 10, 2018.\u00a0 Items on the assessment measure students&#8217; mastery of the end of the year Prekindergarten skills, knowledge, and behaviors across four domains: Language and Literacy, Mathematics, Social Foundations, and Physical Well-being and Motor Development.<\/p>\n<p>School systems are given the choice of whether to administer the assessment to all of their kindergarten students or to a sample of students in each kindergarten classroom. Fourteen school systems administered the KRA to all kindergarten students. Nine systems administered the KRA to all kindergarten students in specific schools and to a sample in others. One school system administered the KRA to a sample in all schools.<\/p>\n<p>While State results show progress, they also show there is much to do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The majority of kindergarteners\u201453 percent\u2014do not demonstrate all the knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to be successful when entering school.<\/li>\n<li>33 percent of the students are approaching readiness (the student displays some of the foundational skills and behaviors that prepare him\/her for curriculum based on the kindergarten standards).<\/li>\n<li>20 percent of the students are emerging readiness (the student displays minimal foundational skills and behaviors that prepare him\/her for curriculum based on the kindergarten standards).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The school readiness information for school year 2018-2019 is available online at <a href=\"https:\/\/earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org\">https:\/\/earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org<\/a> and at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readyatfive.org\">www.readyatfive.org<\/a>.
