{"id":1393,"date":"2015-02-09T11:28:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T16:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/?p=1393"},"modified":"2015-12-11T11:45:22","modified_gmt":"2015-12-11T16:45:22","slug":"maryland-honors-three-schools-for-gifted-and-talented-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/maryland-honors-three-schools-for-gifted-and-talented-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Honors Three Schools For Gifted And Talented Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>February is Gifted and Talented Education Month<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>For Immediate Release \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Contact: Bill Reinhard, 410.767.0486<\/p>\n<p>Three Maryland schools this month are receiving\u00a0 Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School Awards, which recognize top\u00a0 elementary, middle, and high school programs.<\/p>\n<p>The 2014 EGATE schools are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cross Country Elementary\/Middle School, Baltimore City Public Schools<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Roland Park Elementary\/Middle School, Baltimore City Public Schools<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Greenbelt Elementary School, Prince George\u2019s County Public Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now in their fifth year, the EGATE awards spotlight gifted and talented programs aligned with Maryland<em>Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Program Guidelines<\/em> and State regulations for \u00a0Gifted and Talented Education.\u00a0 Each EGATE school submits a comprehensive application which provides documentation of 21 criteria of excellence under four program objectives: student identification, curriculum and instruction, professional development, and program management and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>In the five years of the award\u2019s existence, 33 schools from 10 school systems have earned the EGATE status. Members from the Maryland Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education and local school system personnel review and score the EGATE applications, which<br \/>\ndocument the school\u2019s gifted and talented program activities over a 15 month period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s new EGATE schools will be recognized during Maryland\u2019s Gifted and Talented Education month at a reception and awards ceremony on February 25 from 5\u2013 8 p.m. at North County High School in Glen Burnie.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EGATE schools receive a citation from the Governor, and the EGATE banner to display on their school buildings and websites.\u00a0 They host celebratory visits from Advisory Council members and MSDE staff and serve as models for other schools that want to achieve this status.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the EGATE School Awards Program is available at<a title=\"EGATE School Awards Program\" href=\"http:\/\/marylandpublicschools.org\/MSDE\/programs\/giftedtalented\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/marylandpublicschools.org\/MSDE\/programs\/giftedtalented<\/a>.
