Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Wednesday, June 20

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, June 20, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. Please note: the State Board will continue to meet on Tuesdays for most of its monthly meetings. A Wednesday date was selected for June due to scheduling conflicts.

The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following:

9:35 a.m. Student Transportation

The State Board will consider amended regulations designed to strengthen student safety by adding requirements for drivers’ inclusion in the disqualified driver database. The amendments are the result of National Traffic Safety Board recommendations related to an accident in which a Baltimore City public school bus struck a Maryland Transportation Authority bus.

10:45 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act

Staff will brief the State Board on portions of Maryland’s ESSA plan, focusing on the steps to be taken to define gifted and talented students as an additional student group to be analyzed. In addition, staff will provide information and recommendations on scoring of academic progress for elementary and middle schools and readiness for postsecondary success measures for high schools.

2:15 p.m. Principal Evaluations

Staff will provide an overview of the State’s planned improvements to the Principal Evaluation System, first launched in 2013-14.
