Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, September 25
BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 25 at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following (times approximate):
9:35 a.m. Updating Regulations
The State Board will consider proposals that would update the education section of the Code of Maryland Regulations. Among the proposals being considered for publishing, but not yet final approval: adding an “Extraordinary Career Leader Certificate” for prospective superintendents, adding a new regulation on “Educational Equity,” and adding a new definition for the Gifted and Talented student group.
10 a.m. Calendar Waiver Request
The State Board will consider a request from Montgomery County to allow two underperforming elementary schools to start the 2019-20 school year before Labor Day.
10:30 a.m. State Assessment Results Update
Staff will provide the State Board with additional data on the 2018 administration of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests.
10:45 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act
Staff will update the State Board on ESSA communications strategies, the standard setting process involved in setting cut points for the State’s new accountability system, and the planned reporting of school-level expenditure data.
3:30 p.m. Computer Science
The State Board will be asked to approve Maryland’s new K-12 Academic Standards for computer science.
