Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, May 22

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 22, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following:

10:15 a.m.

National Assessment of Educational Progress
Staff will brief the State Board on the recently released results of the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests. NAEP’s latest release involved reading and math at the fourth and eighth grade levels.

11:00 a.m.

Educator Preparation and Certification
The State Board will hear a report on MSDE’s proposed action plan to increase the rigor and accountability of educator certification and teacher preparation programs in Maryland. Work on the plan was launched by Bill 493, approved by the General Assembly in 2016, known as the Teacher Induction, Retention and Incentive Act.

11:30 a.m.

Teachers of the Year
The State Board will recognize Maryland’s newly named 2018-19 local Teachers of the Year.

3:15 p.m.

Online Learning
Staff will provide an overview of the State’s online courses, the process for developing the offerings, and the status of the Maryland Department of Education’s Virtual Online Program.
