Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, May 21

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 21, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor, beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include (times approximate):

9:40 a.m. High School Graduation Task Force

The State Board will receive information from the Maryland High School Graduation Task Force regarding Diploma by Examination. This task force was first convened in January 2018 at the request of the State Board in order to make ongoing recommendations on high school graduation requirements in Maryland.

11:00 a.m. 2019 Maryland Teachers of the Year

The State Board will recognize Maryland’s newly named 2019-2020 Local District Teachers of the Year. The 24 teachers will represent their school systems in Maryland’s Teacher of the Year Program and will compete for Maryland and National Teacher of the Year.

3:00 p.m. Social Studies and Digital Learning Standards

State Board members will consider updating State standards for social studies and digital learning. Social studies standards were last revised in 2015. Digital learning standards were last updated in 2007. Board members will be asked to move the updating process into the second phase for both standards, allowing the revised standards to be sent to content advisors for review and distributed regionally for more feedback.
