For Immediate Release                      Contact: Bill Reinhard, 410-767-0486

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 24, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m..

Items on the agenda include the following:

9:40 a.m.         ESEA Flexibility
The State Board is scheduled to act on MSDE’s plans to request an extension of the State’s flexibility waiver from the U.S. Department of Education.  Federal officials granted Maryland a waiver in July 2014, allowing the State to move forward with reforms designed to improve student learning and classroom instruction.  The extension would maintain the waiver status through the current school year.  MSDE’s plan was published for public comment in February, and revisions to the original draft were made.

10:40 a.m.       School Wellness Policies
The State Board will hear a report about the Wellness Policies and Practices
Evaluation Project, conducted recently by the University of Maryland, School of Medicine.  The project evaluated the strength and comprehensiveness of written wellness policies among school systems and schools in the State.

2 p.m.              Milken Educator
The State Board will recognize Margaret (Maggie) Hawk, a first grade teacher at Yellow Springs Elementary in Frederick County, named this year as a 2014-15 Milken National Educator.
