Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, March 20

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 20, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

The State Board will not hold a Monday work this month.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following (times approximate):

11:15 a.m. Maryland Superintendent of the Year

The State Board will welcome and honor Dr. D’Ette Devine, Superintendent of the Cecil County Public Schools, recently named Maryland Superintendent of the Year for 2018.

11:30 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act

The State Board will hear an update on Maryland’s progress in implementing its plan for strengthening schools under ESSA. This month’s update will focus on two school quality/student success measures: the planned school climate survey and chronic absenteeism.

11:45 a.m. Online Education

Maryland’s online education program was launched via State legislation in 2004. Since 2012, growth in the program has been rapid. Just 647 students were involved in online courses approved through MSDE in 2012. By 2016, enrollment had boomed to 8,313. The State Board will hear a report on the program.

2:30 p.m. High School Graduation

The State Board will hear an update on the work of the Maryland High School Graduation Task Force, which began meeting earlier this year to look at diploma requirements.
