Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, July 18

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 18 at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

The State Board will not be holding a Monday work session this month.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following:

9:30 a.m. State Board Election

The State Board will elect officers for 2017-18.

9:45 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act

Maryland State Department of Education staff will review with the Board some of the early feedback it has received on the State’s plan for the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Board members last month sent the plan on to the Governor and General Assembly for further review, and launched a new public survey. The State Board is expected to take a final vote on the plan in August.

10:30 a.m. School Schedules

The State Board will hear the recommendations of the Innovative School Schedule Workgroup, charged by the Board to identify creative schedules designed to increase academic gains and provide effective use of limited class time. The Workgroup met monthly from January through March, reviewing and discussing research.

10:45 a.m. Baltimore City

Dr. Sonja Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, will share with the State Board the system’s innovative initiatives, including the Lab School turnaround strategy. In addition, the State Board will hear a report on MSDE’s work to help strengthen struggling Baltimore schools.
