Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, January 22

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 22, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor, beginning at 9 a.m.

In addition, the State Board has planned an information session for Wednesday, January 23. The session—a panel discussion with four top members of Kirwan Commission subcommittees —will be held at 9 a.m. in the same location.  The committees are: High Quality Teachers and Leaders (Sen. Paul Pinsky), Early Childhood Education (Margaret Williams), College and Career Pathways (Dr. Chester Finn), and More Resources for At-Risk Students (Joy Schaefer).

Items on this month’s regular agenda include (times approximate):

9:40 a.m.         Kindergarten Readiness

The State Board will review the latest results from MSDE’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, a statewide assessment administered early each fall to incoming kindergarteners.

10:00 a.m.       Educator Certification

The State Board will consider educator preparation program requirements, including entrance and exit requirements, clinical experience expectations, and the standards and competencies used for program approval.

2:15 p.m.         Prince George’s County Update

Dr. Monica Goldson, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Prince George’s County Public Schools, and members of her team will discuss with the State Board plans to strengthen policies and processes in light of the recent follow-up performance audit of the schools by Alvarez & Marsal.
