Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, February 24

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 24, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor, beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on the agenda include the following:

 

9:40 a.m.          ESEA Flexibility
The State Board will be provided with an update on MSDE’s renewal request for its flexibility waiver from the U.S. Department of Education’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).  MSDE staff plan to return to the State Board in March to request the State Board’s approval of the Department’s proposed request, which would last through the 2017-18 school year unless Congress reauthorizes ESEA.

10:45 a.m.        Title I Distinguished School
The State Board will recognize Anne Arundel’s Belle Grove Elementary School, Maryland’s 2014-15 National Title I Distinguished School.  Belle Grove continues to strengthen achievement among economically disadvantaged students.

11 a.m.             Educator Ratings
The State Board will hear a report from WestEd on educator performance and its correlation to component measures of local system evaluation systems.

1:45 p.m.          Arts Education
The State Board will be presented with the report on the Governor’s P-20 Leadership Council Task Force on Arts Education in Maryland Schools.  Mary Ann Mears, founder and trustee, Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance, and Dr. Jack Smith, MSDE’s Chief Academic Officer, co-chaired the task force and will present the findings.

2:35 p.m.          Student Learning Outcomes
The State Board will hear the results of a survey of Maryland teachers and principals on the progress of the use of Student Learning Objectives in evaluations.
