Maryland State Board of Education Meets on Tuesday, January 28

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 28, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor, beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include (times approximate):

9:45 a.m.         Quality Teacher Incentive Grant     

MSDE will request approval to identify Title I schools as “comprehensive needs” schools for the purpose of awarding Quality Teacher Incentive Grants. This grant allows for the distribution of stipends to teachers and non-administrative school-based employees who hold a certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The award is differentiated by the type of school that employs the individual.

1:30 p.m.         Environmental Education Instructional Programs

The State Board will receive updates on the Environmental Education Instructional Program Standards for grades PreK-12. In 1989, Maryland became one of the first states to require a comprehensive program of environmental education and continues to improve upon Environmental literacy standards in schools.

1:45 p.m.         2020 Legislative Session Overview     

The State Board will be provided with an update on PreK-12 education-related bills that have been introduced thus far during the 2020 legislative session.
