Inaugural Rising Toward Excellence Conference Inspires Future Educators

Teach In Maryland Conference Set for October 17th

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) will host the inaugural Teach In Maryland Rising Toward Excellence Conference tomorrow, focused on inspiring a diverse population of Maryland public high school students to pursue a career in teaching throughout the state.

The aim of the conference is to recruit outstanding students from various ethnic, racial, and gender groups, who are currently underrepresented in the teaching profession in Maryland. More than 250 students from 17 school systems are expected to attend the event. Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, and 2018 Maryland Teacher of the Year Dr. Richard Warren will speak at the event.

MSDE is excited to partner with local school systems and educator preparation programs to provide this unique recruitment experience to Maryland’s most promising students.

WHAT: The conference sessions will feature national and state K-l2 researchers and higher education practitioners, and will be designed to engage young audiences in meaningful discussion and collaboration. The topics will be closely related to the conference theme, including:

• Career Preparedness
• Critical Shortage and STEM Fields
• Teaching with Cultural Competence
• Technology in Teaching
• Benefits of Teaching in Maryland
