Illinois- Based Firm Selected By State Board

BALTIMORE  – The Maryland State Board of Education (State Board) has retained Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to lead the national search for the next Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. The firm, based in Rosemont, IL, begins its work immediately.  The $49,950 contract covers multiple phases of a thorough search process including planning, outreach, and recruitment. The search is designed to assist the State Board in the process of selection and appointment of a new State Superintendent.

HYA is one of the oldest and largest search firms with over 30 years of experience and has assisted more than 1,400 school boards in selecting state and local superintendents across the nation for large, small, urban, and rural systems. HYA assisted the State Board in its 2016 search process for the current State Superintendent, and has completed searches for local superintendents in Prince George’s County, Montgomery, Frederick, and Carroll County Public Schools.

The individual selected as Maryland’s next State Superintendent will replace Dr. Karen B. Salmon.

Dr. Salmon announced in December, 2019 that she would not seek reappointment when her current term expires on June 30, 2020.

The State Board will seek public input through survey feedback, interviews, and regional community forums. Planning is in the early stages. More detailed information will be provided through public notices posted to the Maryland State Department of Education website (http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/Pages/default.aspx).

Regular updates on the process will also be provided during the monthly State Board Meetings. The 2020 State Board Meeting dates can be found on the State Board website or by going to http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/stateboard/Pages/Meetings-2020.aspx
