Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Named 2026 Maryland Superintendent of the Year
BALTIMORE (October 31, 2025) – Dr. Sonja Brookins Santelises, Chief Executive Officer of Baltimore City Public Schools, has been named the 2026 Maryland Superintendent of the Year by the Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland (PSSAM).
“Dr. Santelises exemplifies the bold, visionary leadership that drives real change for students,” said Dr. Carey Wright, State Superintendent of Schools. “Her deep commitment to equity with a strategic focus on student achievement make Dr. Santelises an extraordinary leader.”
“Dr. Santelises is both a fierce advocate for children and a preeminent instructional leader,” said Dr. Joshua L. Michael, State Board of Education President. “Having directly benefited from her leadership as an educator and now as a parent in Baltimore City, I know firsthand the impact of her leadership over the past decade. This recognition as Superintendent of the Year is a powerful affirmation of her service and legacy.”
Since taking the helm of Baltimore City Public Schools in 2016, Dr. Santelises has led with a clear mission: to ensure every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life. Her leadership has resulted in expanded access to advanced coursework, strengthened community partnerships, and innovative strategies to support student success.
The Maryland Superintendent of the Year award, selected by a panel of fellow superintendents following a rigorous application process, recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to excellence in Maryland’s public schools. Dr. Santelises will represent Maryland in the AASA National Superintendent of the Year program.
