Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, April 23
BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 23, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor, beginning at 9 a.m.
Items on this month’s regular agenda include (times approximate):
9:40 a.m. Superintendent of the Year
The State Board will recognize and hear from Dr. John Gaddis, Superintendent of the Somerset County Public Schools, recently selected as the Maryland Superintendent of the Year for 2019.
9:55 a.m. Teacher Licensure
The State Board will consider the implementation dates and passing scores for a variety of certification tests, aimed at increasing the rigor of Maryland’s teacher certification requirement
10:15 a.m. Educational Equity
Educational equity is a critical factor in Maryland’s updated accountability program. The State Board will hear a report on how equity will be measured on the Report Card website, with the academic success of students in particular groups measured against students not within the group and to the school population as a whole.
2 p.m. High School Graduation
The State Board will review diploma recommendations made by the Maryland High School Graduation Task Force, and consider changing Board policy based on those recommendations. Among the considerations: maintaining a single Maryland high school diploma; developing a process for the adoption of seals and endorsements to the diploma, and adding college ready and CTE endorsements to the diploma.
