Maryland Graduates Honored as 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars

BALTIMORE (October 6, 2025)Kelly D. Liu, a 2025 graduate of Marriotts Ridge High School (Howard County Public School System), and Luc Beck, a Bethesda resident from Sidwell Friends School, were recently named U.S. Presidential Scholars by the U.S. Department of Education. Liu now attends Yale University and Beck attends the University of Pennsylvania.

The annual program honors the nation’s top-performing high school students in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.

“Kelly and Luc exemplify the academic excellence, leadership, and service that define Maryland’s future,” said Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools. “Their recognition as U.S. Presidential Scholars is a testament to their hard work, the dedication of Maryland’s educators, and the support of families and communities. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and look forward to what the future holds for both of them.”

They are among the 161 high school seniors nationwide selected for the honor by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. Eleven Maryland public and private school students were semifinalists this year.

Since 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has recognized and honored some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts, and expanded in 2015 to honor students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.
