Maryland is proud to again offer grants that will fund Parking Lot Solar PV Canopies with EV Chargers for a third year in a row. A total of $1 million dollars is available for the grant that closes on February 23, 2017<\/a>. Interested applicants can apply now via the MEA website <\/a>and join the long list of Maryland businesses helping to expand the use of renewable energy to reduce EV battery range anxiety.<\/p>\n

Metropolitan areas with a high concentration of parking lots are ideal hosts for solar parking structures as they can help to reduce urban heat island effect. Urban and metropolitan areas are typically much warmer than surrounding rural areas due to human activities and paved areas that absorb the sun\u2019s heat. Maryland offers a significant reserve parking areas from suburban lots to urban garages and demand for increased EV charging stations is strong.<\/p>\n

This solar canopy and EV program combines Maryland’s Renewable Portfolio Standard goal for solar with the State\u2019s ongoing support of electric vehicle infrastructure. These projects will result in increased clean electricity generation sited close to local electrical loads, and increased locations for plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) to charge.<\/p>\n

In order to drive down the initial costs associated with installing solar PV canopy systems, MEA will award grants to qualified applicants on a competitive basis, within two specified Areas of Interest (AOI). Area of Interest I (AOI I) will be accepting applications from business, non-profits, and local governments while Area of Interest II (AOI II) will focus on State agencies. Selected grantees meeting grant program requirements and restrictions will receive an award in of up to $300\/kW of installed solar PV capacity, with a cap of $150,000 per project.
