Maryland Energy Administration Director Mary Beth Tung and her team were fortunate to meet with the Maryland Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) team this week. BBU has distribution facilities in both Ann Arundel and Howard counties. Maryland Senator, Edward R. Reilly and Pat Daly from Office of County Executive Steven R. Schuh were also on hand along with Joe Rudolph of ROUSH CleanTech.<\/p>\n

In Maryland, BBU has deployed a new fleet of delivery vehicles fueled by emissions-reducing, domestically produced propane autogas. Made possible in part from a grant by the Maryland Energy Administration and equipped with ROUSH CleanTech fuel technology the new Ford F-59 trucks are a major commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are encouraged to see local businesses embracing alternative fuel vehicles which are vital to reducing our reliance on petroleum,\u201d said Mary Beth Tung, Maryland Energy Administration Director.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The total award from MEA, under the Maryland Freedom Fleet Voucher Program (FFVP)<\/a>, was for $340,000 for 45 vehicles which are expected to displace over 190,000 gallons of petroleum annually with lower up-front costs, minimal impact to operations and will allow for stability for fuel costs.<\/p>\n

A citation was presented by Pat Daly from Office of County Executive Steven R. Schuh<\/p>\n

Joe Rudolph, Director of Business Development for ROUSH CleanTech explaining that the market for propane-fueled trucks is developing because the vehicles are quieter, cleaner and have less expensive maintenance costs compared to their gasoline and diesel counterparts. Propane fueled vehicles also have a strong environmental benefit, providing a reduction in carbon monoxide emissions.<\/p>\n

BBU installed an on-site fueling station at their Howard County facility. BBU expects to see a reduction in operational costs as a result of the lower fuel prices as well as maintenance savings due to the cleaner-burning properties of the fuel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis commitment from BBU is a prime example of the Maryland Clean Cities Coalition<\/a> in action, featuring partnerships that promote the economy and protects the environment,\u201d stated Director Tung.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
