In addition to adoption of circular design (i.e., only using renewable and recycled materials for products), IKEA has aggressive carbon footprint reduction plans to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90448729\/how-ikea-plans-to-be-climate-positive-by-2030\">climate positive<\/a> by 2030. IKEA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/files\/pdf\/7e\/58\/7e58334c\/ikea_sustainability_strategy_people_planet_positive_v3.pdf\">sustainability strategy<\/a> identifies on-site renewable energy generation and new installations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IKEA was awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/business\/Pages\/incentives\/PVEVprogram.aspx\">Parking Lot Solar PV Canopy with EV Charger Grant<\/a> of $200,000 from the Maryland Energy Administration to help fund the installation of a 1,575kW solar canopy above their Baltimore store parking lot. Along with the solar canopy installation, IKEA also installed four Level 2 EV chargers, a requirement for all solar canopy projects receiving an award from MEA. The canopy is already paying off, saving this IKEA location <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarpowerworldonline.com\/2021\/02\/dsd-completes-custom-solar-carport-for-ikea-baltimore\/?fbclid=IwAR29vW36nhHuZmICATub-trhWmXu9BFYbNyNENexxLsylW8vqE2Zl2tV4ng\">57% off <\/a>their energy bill between September \u2013 December 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt IKEA, we aim to have a positive impact on people and the planet, which is why sustainability is embedded in every part of our business,\u201d explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarpowerworldonline.com\/2021\/02\/dsd-completes-custom-solar-carport-for-ikea-baltimore\/?fbclid=IwAR29vW36nhHuZmICATub-trhWmXu9BFYbNyNENexxLsylW8vqE2Zl2tV4ng\">Jennifer Keesson, Country Sustainability Manager<\/a>, IKEA Retail U.S. \u201cThis addition of eight solar car parks is the latest in a series of investments IKEA has made in renewable energy, and marks a significant step forward in our goals to be climate positive,\u201d concluded Kesson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IKEA in Baltimore had previously installed an additional 500kW rooftop array in 2012 making the location have a total of 2,075kW. \u201cInstallation of solar canopies over existing parking lots provides a dual use for the land: parking and energy generation,\u201d began Dr. Mary Beth Tung, MEA Director. \u201cDeveloping solar generation on parking infrastructure reduces energy losses in the transmission lines, and reduces the need to develop solar on undeveloped or agricultural land.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/dual-use.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"863\" height=\"270\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/dual-use.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/dual-use.jpg 863w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/dual-use-300x94.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/dual-use-768x240.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 863px) 100vw, 863px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2014, the MEA Solar Canopy Program has added 20,525 kW of solar generation to the state, which is about 26,000,000 kWh of annual energy generation or enough energy to power more than 2,100 Maryland homes.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the life of this program,\u00a0 86 EV chargers have also been installed throughout the state. All current MEA funded Solar Canopy Projects require at least four Level 2 or Level 3 EV chargers to be installed either in, or adjacent to the solar canopy. MEA knows that expanding our EV charging options is critical for our residents and visitors. Maryland ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/2021\/02\/03\/maryland-ranks-4th-in-first-ever-national-transportation-scorecard\/\"><strong>fourth in the nation<\/strong><\/a> for the state\u2019s action to expand transportation electrification use.
