Frederick County received a total of $248,500 from the MSEC program during the fiscal years 2016 &#8211; 2018. The county also leveraged additional funding sources to migrate more of their public transit vehicles toward clean fuel sources and away from fossil fuel sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTransIT is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Federal Transit Administration, the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland Energy Administration to purchase no-emission buses. Our department\u00a0 spends<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> roughly $40,000 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a year per on diesel fuel, maintenance and operations (for traditional fueled buses), \u201dexplained Roman Steichen, Transit Services of Frederick County Division Director. \u201cThese new electric buses will reduce those costs significantly while reducing our carbon footprint, and provide local residents and visitors a way to get around town in a much quieter fashion than a traditional diesel bus,\u201d concluded Steichen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Dawn Ashbacher, Frederick County\u2019s Sustainability Program Manager, \u201cBy removing four older diesel buses, annual diesel fuel usage could decrease by as much as 14,250 gallons.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4756\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4756\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4756\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo-300x167.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo-1024x571.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/fredcobusvideo.png 1049w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=izGmajGROO8&amp;t=0s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>here<\/strong> <\/a>to see a video on the new busses<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reducing that amount of diesel fuel equates to a decrease of 327,750 pounds of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">emissions. In addition, the electric buses are charged from power produced by the county\u2019s large-scale solar photovoltaic system via a virtual process, known as aggregate net metering which allows governments, agricultural entities and non-profits to easily credit clean electricity generated from one location to others, at the county landfill. This virtual powering\u00a0 allows the county to generate solar power in one place and use it in a different place, meaning the buses really do run on clean, renewable fuel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 30-foot electric buses are the first of their type to join a transit fleet in the State of Maryland.\u00a0 A bus can be fully charged in about four hours, can go<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 150 miles between charges,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and can operate in all temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=izGmajGROO8__;!!I2-OFBIJoQBJqqeup9g!VbIrk393OdsM6Idg41IC286gXgl8tIQrNVAw21-CQKepVcRROR5Pq75wVt97BuPycfHYhtv6wQDl$\"><b>video<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the buses being delivered to their new base of operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Past electric bus skeptics cited unfounded risks\u00a0 by bunching too many high-voltage batteries on one vehicle.\u00a0 There was, in fact, a fire on the top of one of TransIT Services older electric buses in 2016, however, the fire resulted from faulty wiring and a failed temperature sensor. Electric buses typically recover braking energy to increase efficiency by a regenerative brake. Additionally the cost of ownership is lower than diesel buses.
