SEIF money makes Maryland\u2019s energy more affordable, cleaner and reliable through programs offered by MEA and other state agencies. These programs address: consumer energy costs , global climate change concerns, job creation, energy resilience, economic development, business retention, and energy freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3741\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million-1024x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million-1024x257.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million-768x193.png 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/60-million.png 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MEA distributed over four thousand grants and rebates\u00a0 to residents, businesses, nonprofits andlocal governments in fiscal year 2019. Included in these awards are more than 3,020 grants for clean energy systems installed in Maryland homes and businesses. MEA also helped fund over 900 tons of new geothermal energy and more than 37,000 megawatt hours of new clean electricity generation, some of which may still be in progress, which is enough power to charge 18.5 million cell phones.\u00a0 In addition, a prior year award for a solar parking canopy at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/2019\/05\/17\/fitzgerald-auto-mall-opens-new-solar-canopy\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fitzgerald Auto Mall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Gaithersburg was completed.\u00a0 This project, installed on the parking garage, involves a 2,475 solar panel roof that is anticipated to provide 80 percent of the auto mall\u2019s electric needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3738\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1-1024x318.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1-1024x318.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1-768x238.png 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/900-EVchargers-1.png 1215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MEA\u2019s programs helped install over 900 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers in fiscal year 2019. Additionally, an EV charging project funded by MEA in a prior year helped<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/2019\/09\/27\/maryland-makes-history-with-first-fully-converted-gas-to-electric-refueling-station-in-the-united-states\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RS Automotive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Takoma Park recently made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/27\/us\/maryland-electric-vehicle-charging-trnd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">national news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when it became the first U.S. gasoline station to fully convert to EV only refueling. More vehicle chargers make it easier for EV drivers to refuel their car and helps lessen range anxiety. Range anxiety is the worry that the EV battery will run out of power before reaching a charging station and is a major reason why a car buyer may avoid buying an EV. More EVs on the road will help decrease air pollution and the need to buy fuel from outside of the U.S.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3743\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC-1024x275.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC-1024x275.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC-300x81.png 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC-768x206.png 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/01\/MSEC.png 1194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MEA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/govt\/Pages\/smartenergycommunities.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Smart Energy Communities (MSEC) program<\/a> welcomed 9 new communities in 2019 and gave out a total of 14 awards expected to reduce annual energy needs of these communities by 1.2 MWH, or enough power saved to run 24,000 laptops for one hour.
