He realized he had a great resource at his Stockton property: Wind.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsville-based<a href=\"http:\/\/www.communications-energy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Communications &amp; Energy Services<\/a>, an Eastern Shore energy system installer, provided Jenkins with an estimate for a Skystream wind turbine from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southwest Windpower<\/a>. Jenkins applied to the Maryland Energy Administration\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/windswept\/index.html\">Windswept Grant Program<\/a> in November of 2010, and was approved for a grant of $6,160, made possible through funds provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recovery.gov\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act<\/a>. The grant covered about one third of the total project cost.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 45\u2019-tall tower and 2.4 kilowatt turbine was installed in March, and provides Jenkins with significant energy savings. \u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t have been able to install this unit without the MEA grant,\u201d he said. \u201cI always disliked the wind at our house, and now I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins believes the turbine installation was a good investment. \u201cI\u2019m so happy to see it turning all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I can get savings on it off my bill, that\u2019s more money than I\u2019m getting in the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins is also enthusiastic about his new turbine\u2019s environmental benefits. \u201cWe\u2019ve already saved about 160 pounds of CO2 from going up in the atmosphere, and I\u2019m tickled pink about that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s helping to save the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Windswept Grant Program is part of the<a href=\"http:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/Residential\/cleanenergygrants\/index.html\"> Clean Energy Grant Program<\/a>, which provides home and business owners, non-profits, and government entities with financial assistance to install solar photovoltaic, solar water heating, geothermal heat pump, and wind turbine systems. The program is designed to help satisfy<a href=\"http:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/mdgoals.html\"> Maryland\u2019s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS)<\/a> requirements and<a href=\"http:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/facts\/empower.html\"> EmPOWER Maryland<\/a> goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seeking a less carbon-intensive way to power his Worcester County home, Michael Jenkins researched renewable energy options.
