<\/a><\/p>\nHurricane season is well underway, here are some tips to help you prepare and stay safe.<\/p>\n
Report power outages quickly:<\/strong><\/p>\n Download the \u2018Maryland Prepares\u2019 mobile app – <\/strong>The MARYLAND Prepares mobile app<\/a>, created by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency<\/a>\u00a0 (MDMEMA), provides important information and tools to help Maryland residents be more informed and prepared for emergency situations. The free app is available for iPhone\u00ae and Android\u2122 devices.<\/p>\n Know your zone \u2013 <\/strong>MDMEMA has a great system in place to keep Marylanders informed with their Know Your Zone<\/a> system. Step 1:\u00a0Click the ‘Find Your Zone’ button,\u00a0Step 2:\u00a0Enter your Address on the map, Stay informed \u2013\u00a0follow MDMEMA<\/a> for weather related updates. You can follow them on\u00a0Twitter<\/a>\u00a0&\u00a0Facebook<\/a>@MDMEMA<\/p>\n Keep an emergency supply kit ready \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>remember to prepare supplies for children, older parents with special needs and your pets. Keep your supplies together in one place in case you need to shelter in place.<\/p>\n Run your generator safely<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 If you have a home generator, make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working and that the generator is at least 20 feet away from your home. Never run a generator in your garage or basement.<\/p>\n Evacuation <\/strong>– If you are in a evacuation zone, follow these tips: Leave Early – Do NOT wait for a mandatory evacuation order. An unnecessary trip is far better than waiting too long to leave safely.<\/p>\n Take Your Pets – Animals left behind in a disaster can easily be injured, lost or killed. Animals left inside your home can escape through storm-damaged areas, such as broken windows. Animals turned loose to fend for themselves are likely to become victims of exposure, starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, or accidents. Leaving dogs tied or chained outside in a disaster is a death sentence. If you leave, even if you think you may only be gone for a few hours, take your animals. When you leave, you have no way of knowing how long you’ll be kept out of the area, and you may not be able to go back for your pets.<\/p>\n Specific outlets in POWER House are painted green, so residents know they can still use these outlets to charge their cell phones or run medical devices.<\/p><\/div>\n Community Resources – If you are unable to leave an area check your community for relief resources in the event of prolonged power outages. For example, POWER House Community Center<\/a> located at 316 S. Caroline Street in Baltimore, MD 21231 is a solar powered, community-based resiliency hub<\/a> where residents can gather. Via their solar power back-ups, POWER House can maintain air condition, refrigeration (for medicine or foods), heat and power outlets for visitors to recharge their cell phones and stay connected to loved ones and emergency services.
