The project here at the University of Maryland, is one of the largest solar canopy projects in the state. MEA recently launched our FY18 Parking Lot Solar Photovoltaic Canopy with EV Chargers Grant, which offers $1.5 Million dollars in funding. A phone is\u00a0not just\u00a0a phone, and this parking lot is no longer just a parking lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\" col-md-offset-1 col-md-10 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The project was a joint effort between multiple departments at the university, as well as the Maryland Energy Administration and WGL Energy.\u00a0The Maryland\u00a0Energy Administration provided a grant\u00a0of\u00a0$250,000\u00a0for the project\u00a0and UMD&#8217;s facilities management matched the funds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1422\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/chris-russell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1422\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1422\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/chris-russell-283x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/chris-russell-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/chris-russell-768x814.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/chris-russell.jpg 833w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MEA Program Manager Chris Russell inspecting the relay boxes for the solar panels.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\" col-md-offset-1 col-md-10 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">These solar canopies have expanded clean energy\u00a0on campus and are just one of the many projects that the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.umd.edu\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UMD Office of Sustainability <\/a>helps to support. \u00a0The UMD Office of Sustainability began in 2007, and\u00a0helps to educate and involve the entire campus from the students to faculty and staff on matters of sustainability.\u00a0Additionally, the office\u00a0maintains the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.umd.edu\/about\/sustainability-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University\u00a0Sustainability Council<\/a>\u00a0that exists to advise the campus, as a whole, on sustainability and the Climate Action Plan. UMD\u00a0recently announced its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dbknews.com\/2017\/10\/03\/umd-loh-climate-action-plan-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate Action Plan 2.0<\/a>, \u00a0and has been active in efforts to decrease the campus carbon footprint. UMD us looking to incentivize green transportation, expand composting efforts and implement new land use and maintenance regulations. UMD is making headlines for their commitment to sustainability, and plans to be\u00a0carbon neutral by 2050.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Things are not and cannot be single use anymore.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\" col-md-offset-1 col-md-10 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Maryann Ibeziako, the Director for Engineering &amp; Energy in facilities management, stated that the new solar canopies are a\u00a0key part of campus sustainability efforts that involve renewable energy. UMD&#8217;s previous on-campus renewable energy goal was to generate 2.7 megawatts of solar power for university facilities by 2018.
