We were fortunate enough to be joined by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/baltimoreenergychallenge\/\">Baltimore Energy Challenge<\/a>\u00a0for the event. Together, our band of volunteers picked apples, weeded and mulched the orchard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1293\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-9-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-9-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-9.jpg 582w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Carroll Park orchard consists of heirloom apple trees that would have been\u00a0in place when the orchard was first planted in mid-eighteenth century by the Carroll family (the orchard was replaced by the city in the early 2000s).\u00a0The orchard is maintained by Civic Works and <a href=\"http:\/\/baltimoreorchardproject.civicworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Baltimore Orchard Project<\/a>. Today, the orchard remind\u00a0city residents of their connection to nature and\u00a0provides hundreds of pounds of fruit for the community, food\u00a0banks and nonprofits each year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1294\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-7-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-7-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-7-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-7.jpg 981w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Civic Works provided the much, tools and water for the day. Civic Works has been helping Baltimore for over 20\u00a0 years through a combination of job training, skills development and community service. Civic works is a past awardee of MEA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.maryland.gov\/govt\/Pages\/CleanEnergyLMI.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean Energy Communities Low-to-Moderate Income Grant Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1298\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-1-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-1-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-1-768x567.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-1.jpg 904w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Early on, Baltimore City had 120 orchards, today, the Baltimore Orchard\u00a0Project is helping to expand local orchards. The organization\u00a0strengthens communities through planting and cultivating orchards, teaching citizens\u00a0to be long-term stewards, and sharing the harvest among neighbors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1300\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-8-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-8-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-8.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mulching is one of the most important ways to maintain healthy plants. Some local nonprofits like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorewoodproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baltimore Wood Project<\/a> makes use of urban tree trimmings to create mulch for city projects, recycling available resources for the better good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1301\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-10-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-10-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/09\/D2S-17-10.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wood is so prevalent in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/treemendous\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tree-Mendous Maryland<\/a>, it is consider a prime renewable resource and a key to our sustainable future.\u00a0 In fact, the MEA offers a grant to\u00a0Maryland homeowners who purchase a qualifying\u00a0clean burning wood or pellet stove.
