{"id":801,"date":"2013-08-26T12:07:39","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T12:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mema\/?p=801"},"modified":"2013-12-23T22:02:36","modified_gmt":"2013-12-24T03:02:36","slug":"second-annual-great-shakeout-earthquake-drill-set-for-october-17-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mdem\/2013\/08\/26\/second-annual-great-shakeout-earthquake-drill-set-for-october-17-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Annual \u201cGreat ShakeOut\u201d Earthquake Drill Set for October 17, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In less than two months, individuals and communities throughout seven states and the District of Columbia will participate in the second <i>Great SouthEast ShakeOut<\/i> earthquake drill.\u00a0 Held annually on the third Thursday of October, the <i>ShakeOut<\/i> is set for <b>Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 10:17 a.m.<\/b> <b>EDT<\/b>.\u00a0 During the self-led drill, participants practice how to \u201c<b>Drop, Cover, and Hold On<\/b>\u201d.\u00a0 Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the proper response to an earthquake is to:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>Drop <\/i><\/b>to the ground<b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take<i> <b>Cover<\/b> <\/i>under a sturdy table or desk if possible, protecting your head and neck<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>Hold On<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>until the shaking stops<\/p>\n<p>Following FEMA\u2019s National Preparedness Month in September, <i>Great<\/i> <i>ShakeOut<\/i> Earthquake Drills are occurring nationwide in more than 40 states and territories.\u00a0 More than 12 million people are expected to participate in drills on October 17.\u00a0 In addition to safety drills, many participant take extra steps to become more prepared for earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <i>ShakeOut<\/i> comes on the heels of the two year anniversary of the damaging August 23, 2011 M5.8 Mineral, Virginia earthquake which caused considerable damage in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.\u00a0 Several national landmarks, including the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Institute, and the National Cathedral are undergoing multi-year restorations as a result of this earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>According to Michael Cline, State Coordinator for Virginia Department of Emergency Management, \u201cWhat we observed during the Mineral earthquake was that most of us did not really know what to do.
