{"id":275,"date":"2012-02-08T12:08:17","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T12:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mema\/?p=275"},"modified":"2012-02-08T12:08:17","modified_gmt":"2012-02-08T12:08:17","slug":"state-highway-administration-ready-for-winter-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mdem\/2012\/02\/08\/state-highway-administration-ready-for-winter-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"State Highway Administration Ready for Winter Weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Have a Plan in Place and Alter Travel Plans this Afternoon as Necessary<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>(February 8, 2012)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has pre-treated major routes in Central, Northern and Western Maryland in advance of winter weather forecasted to visit the region later this afternoon and evening.\u00a0 SHA crews applied a salt brine solution to interstates and primary roadways yesterday in preparation for a quick moving storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSHA will continue to closely monitor the storm, but we certainly need motorists to do their part as well,\u201d said Melinda Peters, SHA Administrator.\u00a0 \u201cTraveling the roads this afternoon during the height of the normal rush hour should NOT be an option; plows need space to clear the roads and gridlocked traffic does not allow crews the opportunity to make the roads safe.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s January 26 storm was indicative of how quickly things can change and we want everyone to get home safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With precipitation generally expected between noon and 9 p.m. crews will remain out until all State roads are clear.\u00a0 Motorists are reminded to never pass a snow plow or plow train.\u00a0 The safest place to be while driving in winter weather is behind a snow plow.<\/p>\n<p>SHA reminds motorists to completely clear vehicles of snow, which could otherwise turn to ice and create a danger to other motorists.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland now features\u00a0FREE 511 traveler information!\u00a0\u00a0Call 511 or 1-855-GOMD511 or visit:\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.md511.org\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.md511.org\/\">www.md511.org<\/a>\u00a0 for current travel information.
