(September 1, 2015)<\/strong> \u2014 The Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reminds Marylanders that September is a good time to review preparedness information for severe weather and other emergencies throughout the year. September is both National Preparedness and Maryland Preparedness Month and government agencies, businesses, community groups, schools, and families will be participating in events to help promote disaster preparedness and community resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the time for everyone who lives and works in Maryland to learn about potential hazards and what they can do to be prepared,\u201d said Russ Strickland, Executive Director of MEMA. \u201cAnd as we head into what is traditionally the most likely time of the year for a hurricane to hit our area, we need to remember that it takes just one storm making landfall in the mid-Atlantic region to cause a major disruption in Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making preparations when threats are not imminent\u00a0can make communities more resilient. Hazards common to Maryland include flooding, high wind, severe thunderstorms, and winter storms. Several online sources provide good emergency preparedness information for these and additional threats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MEMA:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mema.maryland.gov\/Pages\/emergencies.aspx\">maryland.gov\/Pages\/emergencies.aspx<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Federal Emergency Management Agency:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/\">ready.gov<\/a><\/li>\n<li>National Weather Service:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/safety\">weather.gov\/safety<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to preparedness information, MEMA will be announcing events throughout September on our website, Twitter feed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitter.com\/MDMEMA\">@MDMEMA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MDMEMA\">Facebook page<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/md_mema\/\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE\u00a0TO MEDIA<\/strong>: MEMA Executive Director Russ Strickland and other key staff members are available for interviews about disaster and emergency preparedness during the month of September.
