Samantha Kappalman<\/strong> Adrienne Diaczok<\/strong> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Nominations being accepted for the 37th annual Tawes and Coulter Awards for a Clean Environment BALTIMORE, MD (February 5, 2014)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014 Tawes Award for a Clean Environment and for the James B. Coulter Government Employee Award. The\u00a0Tawes Award<\/a>\u00a0recognizes individuals, civic, community and non-profit groups that have demonstrated outstanding efforts to enhance Maryland\u2019s environment over a period of time or with a single project. There are separate categories for youth and adults. The James B. Coulter Award acknowledges outstanding environmental contributions by a government employee.\u00a0 The Maryland Petroleum Council will donate $250 each in the names of the Tawes youth and adult winners to the non-profit group of their choice.<\/p>\n The deadline for nominations is\u00a0April 11.<\/strong>\u00a0Nomination forms<\/a>\u00a0are available on MDE\u2019s website, and may be submitted by email to\u00a0TAWES.AWARD@maryland.gov<\/a>\u00a0or by mail to: Maryland Department of the Environment, Land Management Administration, 1800 Washington Boulevard, Suite 650, Baltimore MD\u00a0 21230, Attention: Jennifer Hopper – Tawes Award.<\/p>\n MORE INFORMATION:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Past project winners have included community clean-ups, school ecology or beautification projects and innovative environmental enhancements\u00a0in recycling, prevention and control of hazardous materials,\u00a0waste reduction and other areas.<\/p>\n In 2013, the Tawes and Coulter winners were:<\/strong><\/p>\n Anthony Thim \u2013 Tawes Award \u2013 Adult Category<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Anthony Thim volunteers as the Deputy Chairman of the Maryland Ad Hoc Committee on Oil. He has also chaired several regulatory review groups, spending hours of his personal time drafting standards and guidance documents and\u00a0providing support and direction regarding regulations.<\/p>\n Nathan Hirtle \u2013Tawes Award \u2013 Youth Category<\/strong><\/p>\n As\u00a0part of his Eagle Scout Leadership project, Nathan Hirtle completed an environmental restoration project in the Patapsco watershed.\u00a0He\u00a0led\u00a0efforts to plant\u00a0more than\u00a03,000 trees near the Liberty Reservoir to benefit water quality. Nathan has also participated in\u00a0environment-related activities that include\u00a0public outreach\u00a0and\u00a0teaching environmental leadership to peers. He is also an outstanding student and a participant in the Maryland Envirothon. He\u00a0intends to pursue a career in environmental science.<\/p>\n Mike Frank \u2013 James B. Coulter Government Employee Award<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Mike\u00a0Frank of Maryland Department of the Environment\u2019s Land Management Administration has more than\u00a019 years of service and experience\u00a0in protecting Maryland’s environment, including working with small businesses and residential communities to maintain compliance and cleanup of oil spills.
