Summers \u00a0today awarded prizes for a dragon, a hummingbird and a colorful chicken \u2013 all made from reused materials \u2013 at\u00a0the 12th annual &#8220;Rethink Recycling&#8221; Sculpture Contest, hosted by MDE.<\/p>\n<p>The contest challenges Maryland high school students to use recycled materials to create artistic and innovative sculptures. This year\u00a068 entries from 29 different high schools across the State were on display. Sponsors including Giant Food, Constellation Energy, the American Cleaning Institute,\u00a0Maryland Recycling Network, Call2Recycle\u00a0and Sims Recycling Solutions donated prizes, funding and refreshments for this year\u2019s contest.<\/p>\n<p>Contest judges tasked with determining the winners of the contest based on creativity, use of materials, and workmanship included environmental education specialist, artist and founder of &#8220;<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nwitimes.com\/niche\/shore\/fashion-and-style\/trash-and-fashion-meet-at-annual-trashion-exhibit\/article_ba698cf4-7fb1-5236-a918-78829a7b8998.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trashion<\/a>&#8221; Rita Mazzo Galindo, \u00a0Valerie Androutsopoulos, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/vangelinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vangel Recycling<\/a>, and Lucas Cowan, Public Art Program Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland State Arts Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>MORE INFORMATION:<\/b><br \/> Since 2001, MDE has celebrated America Recycles Day by hosting the annual \u201cRethink Recycling\u201d Sculpture Contest. High school students from across Maryland are invited to participate by creating sculptures made of recycled and reusable materials. \u201cRethink Recycling\u201d is just one way MDE educates and empowers the public to reuse and recycle materials that would have otherwise gone into landfills. To find out what you can do to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled products, visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/recycling\" target=\"_blank\">MDE\u2019s recycling web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>America Recycles Day, traditionally celebrated on November 15, is a national event that unites business, environmental and civic groups, and local, state, and federal government agencies to promote recycling, source reduction, and the purchase of products made from recycled materials as a means to a more sustainable society.<\/p>\n<p><b>CORE FACTS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998499213\/\">Emma Brenengen\u00a0<\/a> a senior from\u00a0Middletown High School in\u00a0Frederick County was the Grand Prize Winner for her &#8220;Americana Chicken,&#8221; made using soda and vegetable cans.\u00a0\u00a0 She received an iPad Air for her efforts.<\/p>\n<p><b>The category winners, who each received a Nook Tablet, were:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creativity: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998298145\/\">Amy Elberfeld<\/a>, 11<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Century High School,\u00a0Carroll County, for her &#8220;Day in the Park&#8221; sculpture using wire, batteries, string, rubber and bottles.<\/li>\n<li>Workmanship: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998378216\/\">Sophia Fornaro<\/a>, 11th\u00a0Century High School,\u00a0Carroll\u00a0County, for creating\u00a0&#8220;Oklahoma,&#8221; a tornado and homes constructed using wire and cassette tapes.<\/li>\n<li>Use of Materials: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998454324\/\">Taylor Dick<\/a>, 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Southern Garrett High School,\u00a0Garrett County, for\u00a0&#8220;Dolce and Crayola,&#8221; a sculpture of a dress using colored pencils, pencil shavings and crayons.<\/li>\n<li>People\u2019s Choice Category: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998514063\/\">Danosha Blake<\/a>,\u00a011<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Suitland High School,\u00a0Prince George\u2019s\u00a0County, for crafting &#8220;Vanity,&#8221; a peacock made using fake nails, feathers and hair clips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The runners up, who\u00a0each received\u00a0refurbished laptops donated by sponsor, Sims Recycling Solutions, were:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creativity: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998454684\/\">Sarah Blocher<\/a>, 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Urbana High School, Frederick County, for her \u201cHummingbird,\u201d using soda cans, astro-turf and wire.<\/li>\n<li>Workmanship:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998378066\/\">Ivy Lynn Iden<\/a>, 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Southern Garrett High School, Garrett County, for\u00a0crafting her &#8220;Elephante,&#8221;\u00a0made from magazine paper.<\/li>\n<li>Use of Materials:\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998298705\/\">Megan Dominey<\/a><\/span>, 12th grade, Northwestern High School, Prince George&#8217;s County, for\u00a0constructing &#8220;Dragon of Death,&#8221; with aluminum duct, trash cans and tubing.<\/li>\n<li>People&#8217;s Choice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdenvironment\/10998378816\/\">Jillian Yant<\/a>, 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade, Southern Garrett High School, Garrett County, for &#8220;Shadow Harbor,&#8221; a\u00a0shadow box of the Baltimore Harbor skyline made miscellaneous trash including bottles, cans, paper and other waste materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>QUOTES:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through their recycling and waste reduction efforts, Maryland citizens have cut the amount of waste going into landfills and incinerators by over 45 percent. \u00a0Not only does this reduce the need for landfills, it also saves enough energy to power half a million homes or 1.3 million cars for a year. \u00a0This is a wonderful accomplishment, but we must continue to seek ways to further reduce our waste.
