**Media Advisory** Maryland\u2019s First Lady Yumi Hogan to open Department of the Environment\u2019s 16th annual \u201cRethink Recycling\u201d sculpture contest <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Maryland high school students to display their unique recycled art<\/em><\/p>\n

Baltimore, MD (November 28, 2017<\/span><\/span>) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Maryland\u2019s First Lady Yumi Hogan will deliver opening remarks to high school artists from across the state on Thursday<\/span><\/span> at the Department of the Environment\u2019s 16th annual \u201cRethink Recycling\u201d Sculpture Contest in Baltimore. Sponsors of the event are Exelon; American Cleaning Institute; Maryland Recycling Network; the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Beverage Association; Resource Revival; National Aquarium and Waste Management, Inc. <\/span><\/p>\n

Who<\/span><\/h3>\n

Guest judges for the contest will be John Lewis, an instructor at Maryland Institute College of Art; Rowan Bathurst, a student at Maryland Institute College of Art; Jenna Rayman, a former Rethink Recycling contest winner and Hilary Miller, Director of Environment\u2019s Land and Materials Administration. \u00a0Sculptures will be judged based on creativity, use of materials and workmanship. There will also be an award for People\u2019s Choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

When<\/span><\/h3>\n

Thursday, November 30, 2017<\/span><\/span>, from\u00a010 a.m. until 1 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Sculptures will be on display beginning at\u00a010 a.m.<\/span><\/span> Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles will open the program and introduce Maryland First Lady, Yumi Hogan, who will give brief remarks. Judging will begin immediately after her remarks\u00a0and end at\u00a0noon<\/span><\/span>. The awards presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2001, MDE has celebrated\u00a0America Recycles Day<\/a>\u00a0by hosting the annual\u00a0\u201cRethink Recycling\u201d Sculpture Contest<\/a>. High school students from across Maryland are invited to participate by creating sculptures made of recycled and reusable materials. About 60 entries from 21 high schools \u00a0will be judged. Previous contestants have created innovative and artistic sculptures using records, plastic bags, old shoes, playing cards, computer parts and more.<\/span><\/p>\n
