Kabler Memorial Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Chair of the House Environmental Matters committee, Maggie McIntosh has committed herself to serving our State and our citizens, shepherding critical legislation to protect our air, our water and our land,\u201d said Governor O\u2019Malley.\u00a0 \u201cAnd, for nearly three decades, \u00a0Dru Schmidt-Perkins has led the grassroots fight to foster smart growth, clean energy and other significant environmental efforts.\u00a0 It is an honor to be recognized alongside these great environmentalists and advocates for a more sustainable Maryland.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-248 alignleft\" style=\"border: 10px solid white\" alt=\"photo\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/photo-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new Climate Visionary Award was created by the League\u2019s Board of Directors to be given at its discretion to acknowledge an individual, group or organization whose work moves Maryland significantly forward in the fight against climate change. \u00a0The award recognizes the Governor for his leadership in Maryland\u2019s fight against climate change, which led the State to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish and pass the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.maryland.gov\/wind.html\">Offshore Wind Act of 2013<\/a>, in which the State commits to getting 20 percent of the State\u2019s electricity from renewable sources by 2022;<\/li>\n<li>Develop the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.maryland.gov\/executiveorders\/01.01.2012.29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Change and Coast Smart Construction Executive Order<\/a>, directing new and renovated state facilities, be planned and built to avoid or minimize future flood damage;<\/li>\n<li>Increase the State\u2019s tree canopy through various initiatives, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trees.maryland.gov\/\">Marylanders Plant Trees<\/a>\u00a0and 2013\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2013\/10\/01\/new-landowner-incentives-for-forest-management-in-effect\/\">landmark no-net loss of forest legislation<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>Adopt Maryland\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.maryland.gov\/blog\/?p=8977\">Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan<\/a>\u00a0to help Marylanders cut back on their emissions with tips, programs and assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIn this key election year, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters is pleased to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our three awardees in protecting, preserving and enhancing Maryland\u2019s environment,\u201d said Executive Director Karla Raettig. \u201cThe addition of the Climate Visionary Award this year is an exciting development in our ongoing efforts to raise the profile of the climate change issue to Maryland voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-246\" style=\"border: 10px solid white\" alt=\"photo (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/10\/photo-1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The League\u2019s Environmental Leadership Awards annual dinner took place in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Banquet Room in Annapolis. The event was attended by more than 300 people, including Lt.
