Coulter Government Employee Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8326275578845286844docs-internal-guid-c8133737-f9c1-2ecb-e7f2-3b22f332c437\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/programs\/Marylander\/CitizenParticipation\/Pages\/CitizensInfoCenter\/citizen_participation\/tawes_awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Tawes Award<\/a>\u00a0recognizes individuals, civic, community and non-profit groups that have demonstrated outstanding efforts to enhance Maryland\u2019s environment over a period of time or with a single project. Past project winners have included community cleanups, school ecology or beautification projects and innovative environmental enhancements\u00a0in recycling, prevention and control of hazardous materials,\u00a0waste reduction and other areas. <\/span>There are separate categories for youth and adults. The Maryland Petroleum Council will donate $300 each in the names of the Tawes youth and adult winners to the non-profit group of their choice.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8326275578845286844docs-internal-guid-c8133737-f9c1-2ecb-e7f2-3b22f332c437\">The James B. Coulter Award acknowledges outstanding environmental contributions by a government employee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8326275578845286844docs-internal-guid-c8133737-f9c1-2ecb-e7f2-3b22f332c437\">The deadline for nominations is\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">April 11, 2017<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0The nomination form can be completed <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/forms\/ykWLOi8MvaK1nbzQ2\" target=\"_blank\">electronically<\/a> and submitted automatically or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/programs\/Marylander\/CitizenParticipation\/Pages\/CitizensInfoCenter\/citizen_participation\/tawes_awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">downloaded<\/a> from Environment\u2019s website and submitted via email to\u00a0 <a href=\"mailto:TAWES.AWARD@maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\">TAWES.AWARD@maryland.gov<\/a>. \u00a0Hard copies of nominations may also be sent to Maryland Department of the Environment, Office of Communications, 7th Floor, 1800 Washington Boulevard, Baltimore, MD 21230, Attention: \u00a0Adrienne Diaczok \u2013 Tawes Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8326275578845286844docs-internal-guid-c8133737-f9c1-2ecb-e7f2-3b22f332c437\">The awards are sponsored by the Maryland Departments of the Environment, Natural Resources and the Maryland Petroleum Council to recognize youngsters, adults and private and public organizations involved in the restoration and protection of Maryland\u2019s natural resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8326275578845286844docs-internal-guid-c8133737-f9c1-2ecb-e7f2-3b22f332c437\">The Tawes Award is named for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msa.md.gov\/msa\/speccol\/sc3500\/sc3520\/001400\/001485\/html\/msa01485.html\" target=\"_blank\">J. Millard Tawes<\/a>, governor of Maryland from 1959 to 1967. Tawes also was \u00a0the first secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. He is the only Marylander elected to all three statewide offices: comptroller, treasurer and governor. \u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.baltimoresun.com\/2005-09-11\/news\/0509110060_1_coulter-department-of-natural-secretary\" target=\"_blank\">James B.
