This includes things we all can do to keep the water clean. It also includes staying informed about conditions at Maryland beaches.<\/p>\n<p>Any time, any place, up-to-date beach information is just a few taps away with the Maryland Healthy Beaches smartphone app.\u00a0The app &#8211; available for free &#8211;\u00a0provides information from Memorial Day to Labor Day on water conditions and any health-based advisories at your favorite Maryland beaches. The app is available for iPhone at the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/maryland-healthy-beaches\/id904638975?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">App Store.<\/a>\u00a0The app for Android is being revised and is expected to be available again soon at Google Play.<\/p>\n<p>The status of Maryland&#8217;s swimming beaches is also posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandhealthybeaches.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Healthy Beaches website<\/a> on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandhealthybeaches.com\/current_conditions.php\" target=\"_blank\"> Current Conditions<\/a> page. The site includes an interactive map with color coding to show any advisories for a particular beach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/05\/marylands_healthy_beaches.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1513\" src=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/05\/marylands_healthy_beaches.jpg\" alt=\"Maryland's Healthy Beaches\" width=\"100\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The web site also includes daily updates on rainfall for beaches. You should avoid swimming in natural waters within 48 hours of a heavy rain event because potentially harmful\u00a0bacteria concentrations might rise due to polluted stormwater runoff.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandhealthybeaches.com\/current_conditions.php\" target=\"_blank\">sign up <\/a>for email alerts and a text messaging system to let you know if your favorite beach has a notification.\u00a0The website also provides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandhealthybeaches.com\/habits.html\" target=\"_blank\">tips on staying healthy<\/a> at the beach.\u00a0The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department of Natural Resources and MDE also provide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dhmh.maryland.gov\/newsroom1\/Pages\/Healthy-Swimming-Week.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">tips<\/a>\u00a0for National Healthy and Safe Swimming Week, which runs through May 24.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/programs\/Water\/Beaches\/Pages\/BeachesHome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">MDE works with local health departments<\/a> to make sure water quality is monitored. When water quality samples collected from a beach area do not meet state and federal water quality criteria, an advisory is posted. MDE sets water quality standards and assures conformity in the program statewide.
