Tablada Named Deputy Secretary of the Environment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Horatio<\/a>Baltimore, MD (May 4, 2015<\/span><\/span>) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Horacio Tablada, a veteran environmental regulator who most recently headed the Land Management Administration at the Maryland Department of the Environment, has been named a Deputy Secretary of MDE.<\/p>\n

MDE Secretary Ben Grumbles announced the appointment today. Deputy Secretary Tablada joins Deputy Secretary Mary Beth Tung in MDE\u2019s upper leadership team.<\/p>\n

Deputy Secretary Tablada brings to his new position nearly three decades of experience as an environmental regulator in Maryland. He joined the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\u2019s Office of Environmental Programs, a predecessor of MDE, in 1985 as a project engineer. At MDE, he managed programs overseeing industrial wastewater discharges and fuel facilities.<\/p>\n

He was promoted in 1998 to Deputy Director of the Land Management Administration (formerly known as the Waste Management Administration). He was named Director of the Land Management Administration in 2004.\u00a0The Land Management Administration\u2019s responsibilities include the oversight of brownfields redevelopment of former industrial sites, recycling and waste diversion, management of solid waste and hazardous waste, large animal feeding operations, fuel facilities, mining and lead paint poisoning prevention.<\/p>\n

Deputy Secretary Tablada, a native of Nicaragua, came to the United States in 1975 to study at North Carolina State University, where he earned a degree in biological and agricultural engineering. He earned a master\u2019s degree in public policy from the University of Maryland in 2002. He is widely known in environmental and government circles as \u201cHT.\u201d<\/p>\n

“HT is a proven environmental leader, protecting public health against lead paint and other toxins and\u00a0boosting economic development by restoring brownfields and blighted neighborhoods,\u201d said Secretary Grumbles. \u201cHe’s a great asset to MDE and the citizens, businesses and communities it serves.”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a privilege to serve with Secretary Grumbles, Deputy Secretary Tung and my many talented and dedicated MDE colleagues,\u201d Deputy Secretary Tablada said. \u201cI look forward to working with the programs within MDE to find greater efficiencies and the most effective ways to serve our customers while protecting the environment and public health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Secretary Tablada lives in Elkridge. He is married with three grown children and one granddaughter.<\/p>\n
