Summers joined members of the Maryland Green Registry and Bethesda Green last evening to present the\u00a0fifth annual Registry leadership awards and announce the annual membership results.\u00a0The leadership award winners were:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Documents\/MGRawards_certainteed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">CertainTeed Corporation<\/a>\/Siding Products Group of Williamsport,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Documents\/MGRawards_elysian.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Elysian Energy<\/a>\u00a0of Silver Spring,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Documents\/MGRawards_fitzautomalls.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Fitzgerald Auto Malls<\/a>\u00a0of Gaithersburg,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Documents\/MGRawards_hublabels.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Hub Labels<\/a>\u00a0of Hagerstown and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Documents\/MGRawards_lifetech.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Life Technologies<\/a>\u00a0(now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific) of Frederick.\u00a0Winners were chosen based on their commitment to continuous improvement and environmental results achieved over the past year. The awards were presented at the Courtyard by Marriott Chevy Chase. More information on each winners achievements are detailed on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/marylandgreen\/Pages\/LeadershipWinners.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Green Registry website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE INFORMATION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Maryland Green Registry is a voluntary program launched by Governor O\u2019Malley in 2009 as part of the Smart, Green and Growing Initiative to promote and recognize sustainable <strong>practices<\/strong> by organizations throughout the state. The free program offers tips and resources to help organizations set and meet their own goals on the path to sustainability. There are currently\u00a0over 420 organization members.<\/p>\n<p>The Registry\u00a0is a free program that assists\u00a0businesses\u00a0and other\u00a0organizations by promoting and recognizing their sustainable practices.\u00a0Collectively, Registry members have saved over $79 million annually through their sustainable practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of their profile, Green Registry members share at least one quantitative measurement.\u00a0The results are collected\u00a0to demonstrate that even small efforts among a group of committed organizations can lead to impressive results.\u00a0The results also emphasize the importance of measurement to the successful management of environmental impacts at any type and size of organization.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0The following results were achieved on an annual basis between 2013 and 2014:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>525,000 pounds of hazardous waste reduced\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>11.6 \u00a0million pounds of nonhazardous waste reduced\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>547.8 million pounds of non-hazardous waste recycled\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>2.7 million gallons of wastewater reduced<\/li>\n<li>533,000 gallons of fuel saved<\/li>\n<li>9.8 \u00a0million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reduced<\/li>\n<li>457 million kWh electricity saved<\/li>\n<li>645 million gallons of water conserved<\/li>\n<li>1.9 \u00a0million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO<sub>2<\/sub>e) reduced\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>$79 \u00a0million saved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>What do these numbers mean?
