“Rethink Recycling” sculpture contest awards
Maryland high school students to display their unique recycled art
BALTIMORE, MD (November 21, 2013) – The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will host the 12th annual “Rethink Recycling” Sculpture Contest for Maryland high school students this Friday in Baltimore. Chair of the House Environmental Matters Committee, Delegate Maggie McIntosh (District 43, Baltimore City) will deliver remarks and, along with MDE Secretary Robert M. Summers, present contest winners with their awards.
Sponsors of the event include: Giant Food, Constellation Energy, the Maryland, Delaware, DC Beverage Association, the American Cleaning Institute, Maryland Recycling Network, Whole Foods, Call2Recycle and Sims Recycling Solutions.
Former environmental education specialist, artist and founder of “Trashion” Rita Mazzo Galindo, Valerie Androutsopoulos, owner ofVangel Recycling, and Lucas Cowan, Public Art Program Director of the Maryland State Arts Council, will serve as judges to determine contest winners based on creativity, use of materials and workmanship.
WHEN: Friday, November 22, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sculptures will be on display beginning at 10 a.m. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon. The formal program, with remarks and awards, will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m.

WHAT: Since 2001, MDE has celebrated America Recycles Day by hosting the annual “Rethink Recycling” Sculpture Contest. High school students from across Maryland are invited to participate by creating sculptures made of recycled and reusable materials. Approximately 68 entries from 29 different high schools across the state will be judged. Previous contestants have created innovative and artistic sculptures using records, plastic bags, old shoes, playing cards, computer parts and more.
