{"id":919,"date":"2011-02-22T18:47:33","date_gmt":"2011-02-22T18:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=919"},"modified":"2012-08-20T18:48:31","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T18:48:31","slug":"training-for-on-farm-poultry-and-rabbit-processing-certification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2011\/02\/22\/training-for-on-farm-poultry-and-rabbit-processing-certification\/","title":{"rendered":"Training for On-Farm Poultry and Rabbit Processing Certification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 22, 2011) \u2013 To help farmers meet growing consumer demand for local meats, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) in partnership with the University of Maryland will conduct a training workshop for on-farm poultry and rabbit slaughter and processing.\u00a0 This workshop is part of a voluntary certification program to assist small poultry and rabbit operations to meet the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\u2019s approved source requirements to sell poultry and\/or rabbit (off-farm) at farmers\u2019 markets or to restaurants and retailers in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop participants will learn to recognize diseases of public health concern, take basic biosecurity measures, write and implement basic Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures, develop Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, and properly dispose of offal and waste water.<\/p>\n<p>To become certified for off-farm sales, producers must:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0complete the training;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0pass a brief test at the training;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0submit an application for certification along with a $75 annual fee; and<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0be inspected by MDA;<\/p>\n<div>o\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0MDA inspectors will conduct an inspection at least once per year to verify that producers are following food safety requirements.<\/div>\n<p>Trainings will be held from 9:00 a.m. \u2013 4:30 p.m. Registration check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Saturday, March 12, MDA, 50 Harry S Truman Parkway, Annapolis, MD.<\/p>\n<div>o\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Registration deadline:\u00a0 Friday, March 4<\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Wednesday, March 16, Eastern Shore Hospital Center, 5262 Woods Rd., Cambridge, MD.<\/p>\n<div>o\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Registration deadline: Wednesday, March 9<\/div>\n<p>The training fee is $20 which includes lunch and materials.
