{"id":770,"date":"2011-06-09T14:03:29","date_gmt":"2011-06-09T14:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=770"},"modified":"2012-08-20T14:04:30","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T14:04:30","slug":"environmental-education-2011-maryland-high-school-envirothon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2011\/06\/09\/environmental-education-2011-maryland-high-school-envirothon\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Education: 2011 Maryland High School Envirothon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHO<br \/>\nWhile most high school students are wrapping up final exams and tossing their backpacks aside, more than 100 of Maryland\u2019s brightest teenagers will be competing at the 21st annual Maryland Envirothon, a rigorous two-day, outdoor natural resources competition for teens interested in learning about the environment.\u00a0 Teams that won their county competition and are competing for the state title include:\u00a0 Allegany High School (Allegany Co.), South River High School (Anne Arundel Co.), Western School of Technology &amp; Environmental Science (Baltimore Co.), Calvert High School (Calvert Co.), Boy Scout Venturing Crew 202\u00a0(Carroll Co.), The Tome School\u00a0(Cecil Co.), Westlake High School (Charles Co.), Cambridge South Dorchester High School (Dorchester Co.), Walkersville High School (Frederick Co.), Northern Garrett High School (Garrett Co.), Harford Christian School (Harford Co.), Wilde Lake High School (Howard Co.), Kent County High School (Kent Co.), Montgomery Blair High School (Montgomery Co.), Oxon Hill Senior High School (Prince George\u2019s Co.), Washington High School and Academy (Somerset Co.), Leonardtown High School (St. Mary\u2019s Co.), Saints Peter &amp; Paul High School (Talbot Co.), Clear Spring High School (Washington Co.), and Pocomoke High School (Worcester Co.).<\/p>\n<p>WHAT<br \/>\nStudents taking part in the Maryland Envirothon have been studying the state&#8217;s natural resources for the past year. In written tests, five member teams demonstrate their knowledge of soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife, and this year\u2019s special environmental issue:\u00a0 estuaries.\u00a0 Teamwork and problem solving skills are evaluated by natural resource professionals.\u00a0 The winner of the Maryland Envirothon represents the state at the Canon Envirothon, North America\u2019s largest outdoor environmental competition.<\/p>\n<p>WHEN<br \/>\nNews and photo opportunities available:<br \/>\nJune 15, 2011, 1-5 p.m.\u00a0\u2013Student Field Training<br \/>\nJune 16, 2011, 8-11:30 a.m.\u2014Competition and\u00a01-2 p.m.\u2014Awards Presentation<\/p>\n<p>WHERE<br \/>\nSt. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland, 18952 E. Fisher Road, St. Mary\u2019s City, MD 20686<\/p>\n<p>DIRECTIONS<br \/>\nFrom points north:\u00a0\u00a0Take I-97 to MD Rte. 3 in Bowie.\u00a0 Follow Rte. 3 to MD Rte. 4 in Upper Marlboro.\u00a0 Take Rte. 4 south through Prince Frederick and cross the Thomas Johnson Bridge at Solomons.\u00a0 About 3 miles from the bridge turn left at the first traffic light onto MD Rte. 235 South.\u00a0 Travel 4.5 miles through Lexington Park, turning right onto Shangri La Drive.\u00a0 Proceed through the next traffic light.\u00a0 Bear left at the fork in the road on Willows Road and drive 3 miles to the stop sign at MD Rte. 5 South.\u00a0 Turn left and continue 4 miles to the college.\u00a0 After entering the campus, turn right on Mill Field Drive and follow the signs to the Campus Center to meet with the media contact.<\/p>\n<p>CONTACT<br \/>\nBeth Horsey, Maryland Department of Agriculture, 410-841-5865.
