{"id":643,"date":"2011-09-07T16:35:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T16:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=643"},"modified":"2012-08-17T16:35:36","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T16:35:36","slug":"agriculture-secretary-hance-encourages-farmers-to-maintain-security-measures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2011\/09\/07\/agriculture-secretary-hance-encourages-farmers-to-maintain-security-measures\/","title":{"rendered":"Agriculture Secretary Hance Encourages Farmers to Maintain Security Measures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANNAPOLIS, MD (Sept. 7, 2011) \u2013 As the anniversary of 9\/11 approaches, Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance encourages farmers to be aware of their surroundings and if they see something unusual, to report it to their local law enforcements officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the 10 year anniversary of 9\/11 approaching, this is a good time to remind farmers and agribusinesses of on-farm biosecurity measures and to double check that they are in place,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Hance.\u00a0 \u201cI encourage farmers and agribusinesses to be aware of their surroundings, remain alert and vigilant in implementing routine security measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmers should maintain biosecurity procedures to protect the health of livestock by taking common sense precautions to prevent the transmission of disease.\u00a0 Agribusinesses, especially those who sell, distribute, transport, store, or apply pesticides, should review their security risks, needs and heighten their critical security control points. Should you experience a breach in security, pesticide or application equipment theft or if suspicious activity occurs, you should report these incidents to your local police department.<\/p>\n<p>The Maryland Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with Maryland Law Enforcement agencies advises that homeland security begins with hometown security where an alert public plays a critical role in keeping our nation safe.\u00a0 If You See Something\/Say Something &#8211; report any and all suspicious behaviors and situations to local law enforcement.
