CSA members pay an upfront subscription fee to farmers in return for a share of the season\u2019s harvest, which is usually provided weekly.\u00a0 For convenience, many CSAs deliver to central locations for pick up closer to subscriber\u2019s home or work on a certain day of the week.\u00a0 Still others have special rates if the subscriber helps with the harvest on the farm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCSAs are another way for residents to buy fresh, nutritious food directly from a local farmer and to better understand how our food is grown,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance.\u00a0 \u201cThis is the time of year to join a CSA and enjoy the fruits of local farms all summer. By purchasing local food, consumers reduce the carbon footprint of food transportation and protect the environment by keeping land in farming rather than development.\u00a0 It\u2019s another way to help our state grow smarter and greener.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may seem early, but CSA memberships typically fill up quickly.\u00a0 Each operation is different. Check out the CSA listings to see which arrangement, pricing, variety of products, and pick-up location will work best for your family and act now to reserve your spot.\u00a0 The department\u2019s Maryland\u2019s Best program currently has 76 farms listed with CSA shares available.
