{"id":29923,"date":"2026-07-17T13:45:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T17:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=29923"},"modified":"2026-07-17T13:45:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T17:45:45","slug":"public-notice-unscheduled-mosquito-control-activity-in-prince-georges-county-planned-for-july-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2026\/07\/17\/public-notice-unscheduled-mosquito-control-activity-in-prince-georges-county-planned-for-july-19\/","title":{"rendered":"PUBLIC NOTICE: Unscheduled Mosquito Control Activity in Prince George\u2019s County Planned for July 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 17, 2026)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in cooperation with the Prince George\u2019s County Health Department, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will expand mosquito control services in areas due to a public health concern over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying to control adult mosquitoes is planned for the evening of <\/span><b>Sunday, July 19, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> near the following localities: <\/span><b>Cottage City, Brentwood, Hyattsville, Mt. Rainier and North Brentwood.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spraying will occur <\/span><b>after 9:00 p.m. ET<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In the event of inclement weather, spraying will be rescheduled for the next available evening. Any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MDA Mosquito Control Program personnel will use a permethrin-based solution that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/mosquitocontrol\/permethrin-resmethrin-d-phenothrin-sumithrinr-synthetic-pyrethroids-mosquito-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing unreasonable risks to human health. However, out of an abundance of caution, MDA recommends avoiding outdoor activities during spraying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While not all mosquitoes carry diseases, MDA suggests that residents take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wear long, loose fitting, light colored clothing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wear insect repellents according to product labels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avoid mosquito infested areas during prime periods of activity (between dusk and dawn).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regularly clean bird baths and bowls for pet food and water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remove or empty all water-holding containers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Routine spray program schedules are available by county on the program&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mda.maryland.gov\/plants-pests\/Pages\/mosquito_control.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
