Selected Finalists to Prepare Dishes to Celebrate Buy Local Challenge Week<\/span><\/strong><\/em>

ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 28, 2025)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0Maryland Department of Agriculture<\/strong>\u00a0is seeking Maryland chefs and restaurants to submit original recipes using local Maryland ingredients to serve at the\u00a0Governor\u2019s Buy Local Cookout.<\/strong>\u00a0 The annual event, once again being held at the department\u2019s headquarters in Annapolis on\u00a0July 17 from 5-7pm<\/strong>, promotes the statewide\u00a0Buy Local Challenge Week<\/a>\u00a0during which all Marylanders are encouraged to eat at least one local product each day of the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Buy Local Cookout isn\u2019t just a celebration of delicious food \u2013 it\u2019s a testament to what makes Maryland great,\u201d\u00a0said Gov. Moore<\/strong>. \u201cMaryland\u2019s farmers, watermen, and chefs keep our people fed, grow our economy, and preserve our shared heritage. In that spirit, I invite Marylanders of all stripes to submit their best recipes and participate in one of our most cherished annual traditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The recipe must include 50% of Maryland-sourced products with a focus on partnering with at least one Maryland farmer, waterman, or other producer. Chefs are encouraged to submit recipes that showcase ways the average Maryland family can prepare delicious, nutritious meals with locally produced food at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipes will be chosen in each of the following categories: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salad, and dessert. Original recipes will be selected based on simplicity, creativity, availability of ingredients, geographic representation, and maximum use of local ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe annual Buy Local event serves as a reminder of the many easy and simple ways Marylanders can prepare fresh, locally grown meals at home,\u201d said\u00a0Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks<\/strong>. \u201cBy supporting our farmers and watermen, you are supporting our economy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Culinary high school and college teams are encouraged to submit recipes. Selected teams will be invited to provide, prepare, and share their dish at the Governor\u2019s cookout. Complete rules of entry and additional information are available on the\u00a0department’s\u00a0website<\/a>.\u00a0Recipes must be submitted using this\u00a0online form<\/a>\u00a0by May 19.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously submitted recipes are not eligible. A $200 stipend toward cost will be provided by the department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
