6,670 Acres of Additional Farmland Protected Forever<\/em><\/p>\n

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 3, 2024)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0Maryland Board of Public Works<\/strong>\u00a0approved 35 new\u00a0Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0easements during their October 2 meeting. The easements will permanently preserve\u00a06,058 acres<\/strong>\u00a0of prime farmland in\u00a0Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Kent, Queen Anne\u2019s, St. Mary\u2019s, Talbot,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Worcester<\/strong>\u00a0counties, for an investment of more than\u00a0$29 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFarmland preservation is a pledge to keep our rural landscapes not as relics of the past, but as vibrant contributors to our economy and to the future of sustainable food,\u201d said\u00a0Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks<\/strong>. \u00a0\u201cThank you to the farmers who committed their farms to preservation today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation<\/a>\u00a0was established in 1977 as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture.The foundation purchases agricultural preservation easements from willing farmers to forever protect prime farmland and woodland.<\/p>\n

To view a list of the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation easements broken down by county, see this\u00a0chart<\/a>. Having already achieved the 30% by 2030 goal as outlined in the\u00a0Maryland the Beautiful Act<\/a>\u00a0as passed in the 2023 Session by the Maryland General Assembly, the newly-approved easements will help the state meet the next goal of conserving 40% of state land by 2040.<\/p>\n
