This reminder comes after a horse in <strong>Frederick County<\/strong> tested positive for <strong>West Nile virus<\/strong> earlier this month after it began showing symptoms of the virus. Despite a dry start to the summer, recent heavy rains can contribute to an increase of the mosquito population, which can lead to an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">\u201cCases like this should serve as a reminder for horse owners to remain vigilant of the threat of mosquito borne illness throughout the summer,\u201d said <strong>Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks<\/strong>. \u201cWe urge horse owners to speak with their veterinarians about vaccinations, and also remind veterinarians throughout Maryland to report any cases of equine arboviruses to the department.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">The horse that tested positive for the virus had been vaccinated and has recovered. West Nile virus vaccination is recommended as a core vaccine and is considered an essential standard of care for all horses by the <\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none\" href=\"https:\/\/aaep.org\/guidelines\/vaccination-guidelines\/core-vaccination-guidelines\/west-nile-virus\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;color: #0000ff;text-decoration: underline\">American Association of Equine Practitioners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">Signs of West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalomyelitis include fever (though not always with West Nile virus), anorexia, head pressing, depression or personality change, wobbling or staggering, weakness, blindness, convulsions, muscle spasms in the head and neck, or hind-limb weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">Horse owners can also help during mosquito season by keeping horses inside during dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito hours, and using topical insect repellents labeled for use on horses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;color: #212121\">In addition, the department\u2019s mosquito control program will conduct an emergency mosquito spray in the area where the case was confirmed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt;padding-top: 14pt;padding-bottom: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">West Nile virus is a serious and, at times, deadly disease that affects humans and horses. Both humans and horses can contract West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalomyelitis if bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, but the viruses cannot be transmitted between horses or from horses to people. The viruses normally exist in a cycle between mosquitoes and birds, but occasionally eastern equine encephalomyelitis can be transmitted from mosquitoes to mammals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2;background-color: #ffffff;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt;padding-bottom: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif\">Because animals and humans both contract the virus from the bite of an infected mosquito, the department works closely with the <strong>Maryland Department of Health <\/strong>every year to monitor virus activity in equines.
