4,998 Acres of Additional Farmland Protected Forever<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

ANNAPOLIS, MD<\/span><\/strong> (August 8, 2024)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 The <\/span>Maryland Board of Public Works<\/span><\/strong> approved <\/span>49<\/span><\/strong> new <\/span>Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation<\/span><\/strong> easements during their August 7 meeting. The easements will permanently preserve<\/span> 4,998 acres<\/span><\/strong> of prime farmland in <\/span>Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, Caroline, Carroll, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne\u2019s, Somerset, St. Mary\u2019s, Talbot, Washington and Wicomico<\/span><\/strong> counties, for an investment of more<\/span> than $25 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the face of urban sprawl, farmland preservation stands as a vital commitment to our rural economy and the future of agriculture in Maryland,\u201d<\/span> said <\/span>Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks<\/span><\/strong>. \u201c<\/span>Thank you to the farmers who committed to preserve their farms and who commit to agriculture every day<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation<\/span><\/a> was established in 1977 as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. The foundation purchases agricultural preservation easements from willing farmers to forever protect prime farmland and woodland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To view a list of the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation easements broken down by county, see this chart<\/a>. Having already achieved the 30% by 2030 goal as outlined in the <\/span>Maryland the Beautiful Act<\/span><\/a><\/strong> as passed in the 2023 Session by the Maryland General Assembly<\/strong>, the newly-approved easements will help the state meet the next goal of conserving 40% of state land by 2040.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
