{"id":28219,"date":"2024-05-17T10:40:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T14:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=28219"},"modified":"2024-05-17T10:40:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T14:40:15","slug":"photo-release-maryland-agricultural-commission-tour-caroline-talbot-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2024\/05\/17\/photo-release-maryland-agricultural-commission-tour-caroline-talbot-county\/","title":{"rendered":"PHOTO RELEASE: Maryland Agricultural Commission Tour Caroline, Talbot County\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 17, 2024)<\/strong>&#8211; Members of the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mda.maryland.gov\/about_mda\/pages\/md-ag-commission.aspx\">\u00a0Maryland Agricultural Commission<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>recently attended a day-long tour of several agriculture operations in\u00a0<strong>Talbot<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Caroline Counties<\/strong>\u00a0on Maryland\u2019s Eastern Shore, providing an opportunity to see firsthand the innovative practices and hard work that Maryland&#8217;s farmers and producers do to support local communities and the economy.\u00a0 Joined by members of the department\u2019s senior staff,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/home\/\">University of Maryland Extension<\/a>\u00a0agents, and other local ag community members, the tour included visits to<strong>\u00a0Tilghman Island Seafood<\/strong>, the<strong>\u00a0Eastern Shore Conservation Center<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Hutchison Brothers Farms<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Honeybee Flower Farm<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Wye Nursery<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Oakland View Farms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese tours provide us with an opportunity to see firsthand the innovative practices and hard work that our farmers and producers are putting in every day to support our local economy and communities,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks<\/strong>. \u201cIt&#8217;s through these experiences that we can continue to strengthen our relationship with local agriculture and work together to ensure a bright and sustainable future for Maryland&#8217;s agriculture industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/w2uGwIOC9BmKC_OabbNBVMXTQoSISm0wpN4HCQiSMlrU8BmfPMm2tpFZg7PNUEsHIDiGxrZE035K-AWsI-Su8oNwH0OwAEGFfAIoZMkwtoebiJLvB7lxSEF0blov8XULBGP9YTC1e-GTyjcWxWvdCVs\" width=\"293\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Starting at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tilghmanislandseafood.com\/\">Tilghman Island Seafood<\/a>, attendees learned how owner\u00a0<strong>Nick Hargrove<\/strong>\u00a0and his team combat the invasive blue catfish species and support the local economy through their USDA approved wild caught Blue Catfish processing facility.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/TX4kWEOa6vjNaWt_1k2JswIshuuT-BpCW9YaoIH6Ilq1quQUMghl05uVp99iud0LNBuiTk9ujoI3oUOhSI4q2Azq6KXySMIC3OBcebIRvdXN0wW4eHaYBQJfLFqfd9wwYHLs3gN1qfFUr0yA2A0oeLc\" width=\"253\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The next stop at the\u00a0<strong>Eastern Shore Conservation Center<\/strong>\u00a0in Easton allowed Commission members to view the role the organizations housed at the Center support conservation efforts and promote sustainable agricultural practices in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.talbotagcenter.org\/\">Talbot Agriculture and Education Center<\/a>\u00a0provided a locally sourced lunch prepared by\u00a0<strong>Easton High School<\/strong>\u00a0students in the culinary program. The program\u2019s teacher, Linda Brown, also serves as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mda.maryland.gov\/about_mda\/pages\/md-ag-fair-board.aspx\">Maryland Agricultural Fair Board<\/a>\u00a0Vice President and shared the important work local fairs and shows do in supporting agriculture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/h_0XaK6t52c3oGDm7QxvW002b6Hp9uE8rJjUmLvcw9fsfHcdmzNT1k5r8iHg56m-rjYDSZaXKokz6b6bLLk_CFDsOPUjp7gc0NEYgjzRg5xDewPixIJSlDcJT-4l4BfW1foTxIn61xVWdngcmLGSNEE\" width=\"268\" height=\"358\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The forth stop at\u00a0<strong>Hutchison Brothers Farms<\/strong>, a nearly 3,500-acre farm, showcased its operations and contributions to the local economy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/hy8c6ZgUgoC89ckN2GmfaLtpEPEGjO5z3WbmcU13Q5k_2uD0LonuUTJDK_ut4EUkBkG_apTnODCDZRPGq62s5Bw-HF6nzyHyJgmvsdZicfctpZBjxhMnoxpkv2oStPauMhE1o4oe579sMMSjqJElm14\" width=\"257\" height=\"343\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/doeppHuMULqldSx-iPe75mW4LzG6IQ2OJAVFW33eh3nnSvCAeB6vwIWZUcdvciCUj_XlZDWYOmG4Q2tp7ra1PC8CSZrwoChStu8sRXzNBukg0yWXG5x3MvW3uc67mHPuuBPrleeizoWF_I1Q4sNB_2I\" width=\"246\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/honeybeeflowerfarm\/\">Honeybee Flower Farm<\/a>, a flower farm owned by Carrie Jennings, was the next stop where attendees learned about how to maintain and manage meadow-grown fresh-cut flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/QeJ29b0kZ2rSAhn1TelWhMgBS92gnzxCerRAyYS3d-m7FFYnzP_FeGnQHueyjHytl5yjDfiM1VNFYorVDQocehi3abLOKKW5oa0X5ke3M3su8yhCnVKYj0p8aFJuOe5qZKTVRsXV2MMjBHmRdRWJDN0\" width=\"223\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/6w2K0jWPtTrtzb3qxZ7aX9FiyialXcl12_mYQc7ZO_wWYALQ0WTyCjGWbDkdBieAcgqIzrv1bl4wqa3Xljm6gWsC02xEJVo5NSFJ0czorsnvuJCR0CtlPGgDKuKVlaTN699R_hNy1XKK9Qv8x4DYymo\" width=\"247\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In\u00a0Caroline County, Commission members visited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyenurseryinc.com\/\">Wye Nursery<\/a>, founded in 1957 by the father of the current owner\/operator, Karl Fischer, a fourth-generation horticulturist, who provided insights into the nursery&#8217;s history and how it has evolved to meet the changing needs of the industry.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The final stop was Oakland View Farms, a dairy farm operated by Dick Edwards and Scott Youse in Ridgely, MD.
