{"id":27732,"date":"2023-10-18T14:49:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T18:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=27732"},"modified":"2023-10-18T14:49:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T18:49:40","slug":"maryland-department-of-agriculture-welcomes-new-key-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2023\/10\/18\/maryland-department-of-agriculture-welcomes-new-key-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Department of Agriculture Welcomes New Key Staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 18, 2023)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks today announced two new key department staff appointments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><b> Martin Proulx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been appointed as Maryland\u2019s first<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/2023RS\/chapters_noln\/Ch_436_sb0034T.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> State Value-Added Agricultural Specialist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a new position created by the Maryland General Assembly during the 2023 Legislative Session.In his role as<\/span><b> State Value-Added Agricultural Specialist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Proulx will assist Maryland farmers and agricultural stakeholders by providing information and technical guidance regarding value-added agriculture. Prior to joining the department, he served as the agriculture business development manager for Charles County Economic Development for 6 years. In this capacity, Proulx developed, implemented, and administered programs that promoted and enhanced the county\u2019s agricultural industries. Proulx is a graduate of LEAD Maryland, Class XI.\u00a0 He enjoys spending time outdoors and visiting farmers markets for the locally grown foods and crafted goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Secretary also welcomed <\/span><b>Harrison Palmer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as the department\u2019s new executive secretary to the Maryland Agricultural Commission, the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board and the Young Farmers Advisory Board. In his new role, Palmer will staff and organize meetings and tours, elicit feedback from board members on department policies and provide grant funding for fair activities. He has diverse background in leadership and engagement, including service as vice president of the Prince George\u2019s County Farm Bureau, where he served as the legislative affairs committee chair and organized the first annual Farm &amp; Family Day. Palmer holds a Bachelor of Science in agricultural and environmental technology with a minor in leadership in agriculture and life sciences from North Carolina State University and is a current fellow of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umd.edu\/programs\/agriculture-food-systems\/program-areas\/integrated-programs\/lead-maryland\"><b>LEAD Maryland<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Class XII.
