Annapolis, MD (March 14, 2023)-<\/b> Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) Secretary Kevin Atticks, alo<\/span>ng with key staff from the agency, recently visited Wicomico and Worcester Counties to listen and learn about\u00a0<\/span>agriculture\u00a0on the Lower Shore.<\/p>\n

The tour kicked off with a visit to the Salisbury Animal Health Lab, marking Secretary Atticks\u2019 first visit as the head of t<\/span>he department to the brand new, state of the art lab just outside of Salisbury. The lab is\u00a0 an integral part of Maryland\u2019s response to the ongoing avian influenza outbreak.\u00a0 \u201cThis lab has been on the front line of the HPAI outbreaks on the Delmarva.\u00a0 Maryland and Delaware have worked together in a collaborative effort to curb the effects of this devastating virus affecting our number one commodity on the Eastern Shore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following a visit with former MDA Secretary Roger Richardson at his farm in Worcester County, the group traveled to <\/span>Bordeleau Winery<\/span><\/a> in Eden to celebrate Maryland Wine Month. Owner\/operator Tom Shelton discussed his passion for and science behind wine making wine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The delegation\u00a0ended the day-long tour with a visit to the <\/span>Collins Wharf Sod Farm<\/span><\/a> located near Allen.\u00a0 During the visit, owner\/operator Eddie Collins and his family gave an overview of his farm and what goes into growing sod and turf.\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span>\u201cThe diversity of Maryland agriculture and what these farmers do to sustain their respective businesses is truly remarkable\u201d said MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks. \u201cAgriculture in Wicomico and Worcester counties demonstrate why Maryland is called America in miniature. I am excited to see these industries grow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
